LEGO Technic Solar System 2027: 8 planets, lots of mechanical parts—but 100 euros?

So, LEGO has just unveiled the new Technic Solar System set for 2027. Eight planets that orbit the sun using a hand crank, plus lots of gears. That sounds really nice at first. But then I saw the price: 99.99 euros for 572 pieces. Wow, that really made me gasp a little.

What’s included in the new solar system?

The model is set to be released on January 1, 2027. The idea is that the eight planets move at different speeds thanks to a mechanical system. That’s exactly what I find interesting. I like models like this, where you don’t just put something on a shelf afterward, but can also turn a crank and watch how the whole thing works.

A previous version featuring the Sun, Earth, and Moon has already been released. The new model takes it a step further and depicts the entire solar system with eight planets. And yes, the planet with the striking ring is indeed Saturn. It looks pretty nice in the first few pictures.

Lots of printed parts—but does that justify the price?

What immediately caught my eye in the product photos: There really do seem to be a lot of printed elements included. Just looking at the individual layers of the model, you can see numerous labels. Then there are the planets, some of which also appear to be printed. Of course, based on the pictures alone, I can’t say for sure whether everything is actually printed or if stickers are used anywhere.

But we’re obviously not talking about just two or three decorated pieces here. That’s probably quite a lot. However, even though I think that’s a good thing, it still comes out to almost 100 euros for 572 pieces. And personally, I find that pretty steep at first glance.

Of course, the price per part isn’t everything when it comes to a Technic model. If the mechanics work really well and the planets move smoothly, it can definitely be fun to build and demonstrate. But that doesn’t mean I have to think every price is reasonable.

I’ve built a similar solar system from CaDA

I’ve actually built a solar system from CaDA myself. And I have to say: I really enjoyed it. That’s why I’m curious to see how the mechanics of this LEGO model compare. But I don’t want to just claim that one is better than the other—after all, I haven’t built the new LEGO set yet.

What I can say right now is this: I definitely wouldn’t buy it from LEGO itself for 99.99 euros. If anything, I’d wait for it to hit the open market first and see what kind of prices are available. You can check back later to see if the price gets more attractive through LEGO Deals and Live Deals.

What does the community think of the new LEGO Solar System set?

I also checked out the comments on Jay’s Brick Blog. And opinions there are definitely mixed. Some are happy that, after the smaller Sun-Earth-Moon model, LEGO is now featuring all eight planets. One reader even thinks the set could be used in the classroom.

Others take a more critical view. They point out the high price; some would have preferred a rounder sun; and several comments mention that Pluto is missing. That said, Pluto is now classified astronomically as a dwarf planet—but of course, that’s another topic that makes for a wonderful discussion.

I can see both sides. It’s a really nice idea, especially if you’re interested in space and technology. But when I look at the pictures and then look back at the 99.99 euros, I’m still not convinced.

My conclusion: Hold off for now

So, I’d definitely hold off on this set for now. Maybe the mechanics will totally surprise me later. Maybe the model will look much better once it’s assembled than it does in the pictures. Anything’s possible.

But just because LEGO is releasing a new Technic solar system set doesn’t mean I have to buy it right when it goes on sale. I’d wait for a decent discount at retail stores. And then I can take another look at the whole thing.

If you want to check out the new set for yourself, you can find it here in the official LEGO Store. As always, you can find more news, deals, and our channels via the Brick-Tracker overview.

But now I’d like to hear your thoughts: Do you think 100 euros for the solar system is reasonable, or is that too much even for you? And has anyone here already built the older model or a solar system from CaDA?
